Renew and Refresh Your Life This Spring

BeWELL Blog

There is nothing like spring in New York. As the winter chill starts to lift, the city feels alive again with possibility. Spring has long symbolically been the season of renewal and rebirth, and why wouldn’t it be? The colors start popping from the trees and our closets, the birds start singing again, and the sunshine instantly lifts those winter blues. Spring’s miraculous power to make us feel full of life and energy, paves the way for us to rejuvenate our routines and refresh our goals. Whether it’s personal development, career advancement, or improving your health, spring’s extra hour of sunshine is a daily invitation to focus on growth and happiness.

“This felt like one of the longest, grayest winters on record!” says BeWELL’s Founder and Director, Diana Gasperoni. “Watching the sun stay out longer and the effect it has on your mood and the moods of those around you is infectious. Spring is a time of rebirth and new beginnings, it’s a great time to revisit new years intentions or start something new. a spring cleaning of the mind and body from the darkness of winter.”

Here’s how you can make the most of this season of renewal:

Reflect on the Past, Plan for the Future, but Live in the Moment

As the flowers start to bloom, so can our aspirations. Start by reflecting on the past months. Which goals have you achieved? What have you noticed about yourself and your habits? Or what intentions remain unfulfilled? Maybe your goals have shifted over the last few months, or maybe you’ve encountered unforeseen challenges or changes. As you reflect, remember to try to do so without judging yourself. And try to  remember that change and challenges are a natural course in the journey of personal growth.

Once you’ve taken stock on the past season, it might be the perfect time to set some new goals, or revisit some old goals that may have been just out of reach for you to achieve over the winter. When setting and resetting goals, one of the biggest things to consider is achievability. Asking yourself; “is this goal achievable? How can I set myself up for success to reach this? And how can I hold myself accountable and stay on track?” can be very useful. “I recommend writing down your goals, whether they are brand new or something you want to revisit. Not only does this provide clarity, but it also acts as a powerful motivator. Journaling is something that I recommend to all my clients, because it can be extremely useful to pin down what exactly you want, where/how to get there, and also to see where you’ve been.” says Mind-Body Coach Cristin Van Horn

Cleanse and Declutter

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home, it’s also for your mind and body. Start by decluttering your living space, after all a tidy environment can help clear your mind and improve focus. Donate items you no longer use, or better yet, consider selling them to fund one of your new goals.

Furthermore, consider digital decluttering, which can include unsubscribing from unwanted emails or deleting unneeded files and apps. This cleansing can also extend to your social circle and relationships. Nurturing positive relationships and stepping back from those that drain your energy can be incredibly refreshing, and can help you align more closely to your goals.

Nurture Your Health

With warmer weather and longer days, spring is the perfect time to revive your physical health. If you’ve been less active over the winter, ease back into a routine that you enjoy, whether it’s grabbing a friend for a walk, yoga, or a new sport.

“Grab a buddy and try a new walking route or exercise class. Wake up a little earlier and greet the sun, get new sheets and update your sleep hygiene, update your diet and meet with a health coach.” says Diana Gasperoni “Go to the farmers market, eat what’s in season, learn how to cook a new meal or two.” Embracing seasonal foods is a great way to capitalize on the season. Spring offers an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that can revitalize your diet and, by extension, your body and mind.

Mental health is just as crucial as physical health. Spring is the perfect time to begin incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine, such as meditation or journaling. These can help manage stress, keep you aligned with your new spring goals, and increase your overall sense of well-being.

Learn Something New

Spring symbolizes new beginnings, making it a prime time to learn a new skill or hobby. Always wanted to paint? Take a class. Interested in coding? There are countless online resources to get you started! New activities, meeting new people, and getting out of your typical routine can boost your brain function, increase your self-confidence, and potentially open up new personal and professional opportunities.

Reconnect with Nature

There’s no better way to embrace spring than by connecting with nature. Not only is spending time outdoors beneficial for your physical health, but it also has a profound impact on reducing stress and increasing happiness. Take at least part of your workouts outside, try hiking, or simply have lunch in the park to absorb those healing sun rays (but of course don’t forget your sunscreen!)

Use Your Extra Hour of Sunshine

With the gift of an extra hour of daylight, consider how you can use that time to push forward with your goals. Here are a few ideas:

  • Early Morning Workouts: Utilize the brighter morning to kick-start your day with energy and positivity.
  • Evening Walks: After dinner, step out for a walk. It aids digestion and gives you a moment to reflect on your achievements.
  • Gardening: This not only beautifies your space but also provides a sense of accomplishment and connection to the earth.
  • Reading Time: Wind down your day by spending time with a good book outside, perhaps in a sunny spot in the garden.
  • Family Time: Use the extra light for more family activities, maybe even starting a mini soccer game or a weekly family gardening time.

Spring is more than just a season, it’s a metaphor for renewal and endless possibilities. As you move forward into this spirited time of year, carry with you the resolve and enthusiasm that comes with longer days and warmer weather. Refresh your goals, clear out the old, and breathe new energy into every area of your life. There’s no better time than now to cultivate growth and joy. And most importantly, embrace the season, the sun, and the shiny newness that the spring holds.
