How Wellness Connects Us to Our Mind, Body & Spirit
Learning More About Our Wellness Services at BeWELL in Hoboken, NJ, and NYC
Traditional therapy is still one of the most effective ways to untangle thoughts, build awareness and work toward changing patterns. However, there is a crucial component that is often skipped when we start working toward healing. Working on our mental health is a vital aspect of our overall well being and where so many of us start our journeys. But when we aren’t addressing the stress, tensions and trauma we store within our bodies, we are missing a critical aspect of this work.
When we are able to shift our mindset to seeing the healing process as something that requires our minds, our bodies and our spirits – that is when we start to work towards true healing. One of the most powerful ways to work towards true healing is through wellness and somatic practices. These practices allow healing to happen on a cellular level. They teach us how to listen to the wisdom of our bodies, not just our minds. By integrating natural wellness and somatic practices like Reiki and breathwork, we begin to move towards a holistic path forward — one that honors the full spectrum of human experience.
Because healing doesn’t just happen through the mind — it happens through the body, too. That’s why we’re expanding our offerings to include natural, body-based modalities that support emotional well-being, physical release, and energetic balance. This new branch of the practice is devoted to somatic healing — therapies that invite you to come home to your body and process life not just with words, but with movement, energy, and breath.
Wellness Practices vs. Somatic Practices at BeWELL in NYC and Hoboken, NJ
Now more than ever, so many of us are focusing on how we can integrate wellness practices into our lives. With so many options available to us both in person and virtually, like most health related information it can oftentimes feel overwhelming to know where to begin but beginning is the most important step.
The term wellness practice refers to a deliberate set of activities, choices, and lifestyles that individuals engage in to enhance their overall well-being across multiple dimensions. These practices aim to improve our physical, mental and emotional health. Wellness practices could be exercise, healthy eating, sleep hygiene, mindfulness and stress management. A lesser known term that is just starting to gain more popularity and clarity is the term ‘somatic healing’. Somatic healing lives under the umbrella of wellness practices.
The word “somatic” comes from the Greek soma, meaning “body.” Somatic healing techniques recognize that our bodies store our life experiences — from everyday stress to long-held trauma. When left unprocessed, these experiences can manifest as chronic tension, illness, anxiety, emotional numbness, or feeling “stuck” in life. Somatic healing practices help to gently release these blocks, so that energy can flow freely again — allowing us to feel more whole, alive, and connected. Somatic Healing is a body-focused method of healing that focuses on our connection between our minds and our bodies, not one or the other.
Two of the cornerstone modalities we now offer are Reiki and Breathwork — both powerful somatic tools that work on emotional, physical, and energetic levels. Learn More about Reiki and Breathwork HERE.
Reiki in Hoboken and NYC: Clearing the Energetic Pathways
Reiki is a Japanese natural healing technique used for stress reduction and promotion of physical and emotional well-being. Reiki focuses on measuring and balancing energy in the seven main chakras. Energy is transferred from a practitioner’s hands to a client’s energy field, with hands hovering just above the body at chakra points. The intention is to release negative energy and infuse positive energy back into the system.
Chakras are pipes that take in energy from other people and the outside world. Chakras also send your energy out to the world. Over time, energy can become blocked or stagnant due to trauma, emotional pain, toxic relationships, stress, or illness. Just as our physical body benefits from rest and nourishment, our energetic body also requires cleansing and care. Reiki clears the energetic “pipes,” helping to restore a sense of peace, groundedness, and clarity. The effects can be profound — especially for those navigating grief, loss, life transitions, or emotional overwhelm. Not only does reiki help us navigate through difficult losses, life transitions or general stressors, it also creates space for a deeper connection with our energy. It is a warm, supportive practice that helps us drop into our parasympathetic nervous system which is where we rest, digest and heal to make space for true healing.
Breathwork: Releasing Trauma Through the Body
There are many styles of breathwork and you may have already experienced some in a yoga class, during a workout or during any mindfulness based practice. There are a number of breathwork practices that can both help regulate, or calm down, our nervous systems and other styles that can help activate our system for a cathartic release. The type that I have found to be the most healing and transformational in my own journey as well as with my clients is a 3 part breath. This style of breathwork is a 3-part active meditation that works to release stuck energy in the body such as stress, tension or trauma.
This 3-part breathwork technique uses rhythmic mouth breathing (two inhales, one exhale) to bypass our thinking mind and connect directly with our bodies. This style of breathwork can help us create space for a cathartic emotional release, to support nervous system regulation, and help clear emotional or energetic blocks that talk therapy alone may not reach.
A more active style of breathwork is especially supportive for those suffering from chronic pain, anxiety, depression, asthma, or deep-rooted trauma. As you breathe, you may find yourself releasing anger, grief, fear, or limiting beliefs — not through analysis, but through sensation, sound, and movement. The release that breathwork gives us creates space for deeply connecting to your intuition, your creativity and gives you an overall sense of wholeness.
Why Somatic Practices Are The Missing Link to Our Wellness Routine
Whether you’re processing grief, navigating anxiety, healing trauma, or simply yearning to feel more grounded and alive, somatic healing practices like reiki, breathwork or any other natural healing modality offer a deeply personal and powerful path back to yourself. These practices are rooted in ancient traditions, simple principles and filled with powerful intention. Just like the work we do to rewire our neural pathways to build a healthy, peaceful mental state, we can make space for a similar healing process with our bodies and our spirits. The work is peaceful and natural, all that is required is your willingness and availability to a more authentic, connected version of you.
If you’re ready to explore these practices or add them to your current therapy journey, we’re here to support you. Healing is not one-size-fits-all. Sometimes the most transformative work happens not through words, but through our breath, our energy, and our presence.
