Therapy is a collaborative process…an on-going evolving process. To some, thinking about engaging in therapy may be scary and overwhelming as the initial goal may seem unattainable for many reasons. Mirza understands that it takes tremendous courage to enter the therapeutic space. Mirza’s dynamic and unique therapeutic approach aims to engage clients in a collaborative healing journey while honoring her client’s autonomy and recognizing that each individual is the expert in their own life. Mirza strives to create a safe space where clients can process their experiences, reflect on challenges, while identifying and utilizing their strengths to bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
Mirza has experience working with diverse populations, including adolescents and young adults with a history of trauma. This experience has set the foundation and focused Mirza’s practice in understanding how a single traumatic experience as well as prolonged exposure to adverse experiences affects how we see ourselves; in addition to how we see, interpret, and interact with the world around us. Mirza employs a psychodynamic approach when working with her clients to help client’s increase self-awareness, practice self-compassion, and identify effective coping strategies to improve their quality of life.
As an Afro-Latina, Mirza is a strong advocate for the education and awareness of mental health among people of color. Mirza believes that in order to overcome racial barriers and breakdown societal constructs we must work relentlessly towards eliminating stigmas that keep black and brown people from connecting with culturally appropriate mental health services.
Mirza is a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York, and a Certified Dual Language Practitioner (English/ Spanish). In addition to her experience treating trauma, she also has experience working with clients who face challenges related to depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues, and life transitions. Mirza has post-graduate training in cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness practices, restorative practices, and motivational interviewing.
